Water Parks, Disney World (Florida)

History

If your image of a water park is a bunch of nondescript slides held up by exposed wooden superstructures surrounded by an over glorified city pool then you are in for a special treat.

Disney's water theme parks are of a whole different variety. The same attention to detail in theming that we enjoy in their major theme parks has been employed in their water theme parks.

Things to know before you go
  • Swimwear with exposed metal (i.e. rivets or buckles) will not be permitted on slides
  • Children under the age of 10 will need to be accompanied by an adult
  • Park will close during rainstorms and there are no refunds extended due to weather related closings
  • There is no Water park-hopping, that is you cannot visit Disney's other water park Typhoon Lagoon with your Blizzard Beach admission
  • Blizzard Beach will close for refurbishing for approximately one month a year for dates call (407) 560-3400
  • Shade is limited so stock up on sun screen

      Theme Parks & Nearby excursions

  • Typhoon Lagoon

This water park, which first opened in June of 1989, is themed around the once prosperous Placid Palms Resort that was struck by a typhoon. The centerpiece is the 100-foot Mount Mayday where the parks two speed slides, four twisting body slides and three tube slides all are located. Guests will also notice the Miss Tilly a shrimp boat that was stranded on top of Mt. Mayday during the storm that turned the island upside down.

Beneath the 100-foot manmade mountain the theme spreads out with water cascading down to the two and a half-acre lagoon that is surrounded by white sand beaches. The tropical setting with its lush vegetation offers plenty of comfortable and shaded areas that guests can retreat to.

The tropical winding paths that lead away from the entrance take guests to the storm damaged resort that plays host to many of the guest services.

    Attractions:

    - Ketchakiddie Creek: A toddler pool with fountains and body slides
    * Height limitation of 48 or under
    - Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool: Located at the base of Mt. Mayday this purported to be the largest inland wave pool in the world.
    * Guests will find an alternating selection of waves ranging from small waves to the six-foot bodying surfing variety
    - Castaway Creek: This inner tube journey takes guest on a relaxing journey that lasts about 20 minutes.
    * Guests can enter or exit at five separate areas by either catching an empty tube or abandoning the one they were riding in.
    - Humunga Kowabunga: This is the top dog of the thrill slides at the park. Those who dare will take the 10-second plunge down one of two slides.
    * Height requirement of 48; Age Restriction of 9 years old and up
    - Storm Slides: Three body slides that corkscrew their way through rocky caverns at 30 mph

    - Mayday Falls: A single person tube ride down some pretty fast and bumpy areas
    - Keelhaul Falls: Like Mayday Falls this is a single person tube ride, but at much slower pace, although there is a surprise that awaits you about half way down
    - Shark Reef: After your five-minute snorkel lesson you can head across the salt-water lagoon where a variety of tropical fish await you.
    * In case you are left wondering those were real live sharks you saw along the way.
    * Guests will encounter three of the more passive variety in the shark family, leopard, nurse and bonnethead.
    * Snorkel equipment available at no extra fee

  • Blizzard Beach

With the snow covered Mt. Gushmore as its centerpiece this outrageous and fun theme is continued throughout the park. Guests will find ski jumps, toboggan rides and slalom runs that all have been turned into water slides. At the base of Mt. Gushmore all the melting snow has formed a lagoon that serves as the parks wave pool.

Blizzard Beach with its 17 slides, which includes the 120-foot, feet first, eight second plunge down Summit Plummet, is perhaps more action orientated than Disney's other water park Typhoon Lagoon.
