The main port of the "Big Island" (Hawaii), Hilo is the gateway to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the many scenic and historic attractions of what is also called the Orchid Island. Hilo gardens and greenhouses (which welcome visitors) ship masses of orchids to the mainland. Lyman House Memorial Museum was the home of American missionaries in the 1800s; historical and geological exhibits are found here, as well as a display on the island's early inhabitants. At Wailuku River State Park view beautiful Rainbow Falls. North of the city is Akaka Falls State Park, where the highest of several waterfalls drops 420 feet.
