The commercial center for the north
shore and its miles of surfing beaches, Haleiwa on Waialua Bay is
loaded with shops, restaurants, and fast food places. You'll find
the rocky Haleiwa Ali'i surfing beach on the west side of the bay.
On the east side of the bay, Haleiwa Beach County Park offers good
year-round swimming, even when the winter surf is at its most
threatening elsewhere.
Further along the shore, Waimea Bay is famous for its giant waves
and the daring surfers who ride them during winter months. The
area's most popular stop, Waimea Falls Park, is a natural valley
that has been cultivated as a tropical arboretum. You can walk
through the gardens or ride an open-sided bus up the valley to
Waimea Falls where divers plunge from the 55-foot cliffs into the
pool below the falls.
You can also drive into the
mountains for a spectacular view of the bays and beaches from the
ancient temple at Puu O Mahuka Heiau.
