Populated by only 9,000 people, Sitka
is one of Alaska's most historic towns. Its earliest inhabitants
were the Tlingit people, who still live there and have a rich
culture. Sitka was also the capital of the Russian government in
America, and the headquarters of the Russian American Co., which
dealt in furs and shipbuilding. Three museums, including the Isabel
Miller Museum and the Sheldon Jackson Museum, tell the story of
Sitka, each focusing on a different aspect.
