Weathered buildings give a frontier
look to this turn-of-the-century gold rush town. Nome's population
is 50% Eskimo. Access is only by air. Take a self-guided historical
walking tour and enjoy dog team demonstrations, gold panning,
visiting the museum and shopping for native arts and crafts,
especially ivory. Miles of roads around Nome provide access to
wildlife, fishing, hiking or camping. The extended daylight of
summer allows for time to explore the Seward Peninsula, tundra
teeming with wildflowers, moose, bear, reindeer, sea birds and
seals. The grueling Iditarod Sled Dog Race is run annually from
Anchorage to Nome.
