Gold, government, and an accessible
glacier identify Alaska's capital city, the only one in the U.S.
with no road access, but served daily by air and marine ferry
systems. Founded in 1880, when gold was discovered in the creek that
flows through the present-day downtown, Juneau is Alaska's
third-largest city. In its heyday, $158 million in gold was
extracted from the rich ore lodes in the surrounding mountains.
Before the mines closed in the early 1940s, Juneau boasted one of
the largest gold mines in the world.
You can visit the onion-domed
Russian church, a reminder of Russian America; the Capitol; the
Governor's Mansion; the Alaska State Museum; and a quaint and
well-preserved historic district. Juneau serves as the gateway to
Glacier National Park. |
